Summary
Professor Salvant provides a historical overview of the development of African- American literature from the mid 18th century through the present. He describes the role of black literacy as a challenge to the ideology of racial inferiority as well as the influence of the slave narrative in the anti-slavery movement. He chronicles the birth of the African-American novel’, followed by the social protest literature of the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction eras. In the 20th century, the Harlem Renaissance era was followed by the literature of the social protest and Black Arts Movement of the mid 20th century. Finally, he describes contemporary African-American literature.
