O professor Dickinson apresenta um panorama histórico do desenvolvimento da experiência religiosa dos Afro-Americanos de 1600 até o momento atual. Ele explica as contribuições de religiões africanas até a religiosidade dos Afro-Americanos, as relações da primeiras igrejas dos negros com as de brancos e o papel destas igrejas no movimento abolicionista até o final do século XIX. Descreve ainda o papel da igreja dos negros na articulação de uma teologia Afrocêntrica, seu papel em tornar os negros aptos ao trabalho e no movimento dos direitos civis. Finalmente, discute a tensão atual na igreja dos negros nos Estados Unidos entre a teologia de libertação e a teologia da prosperidade.

Summary
Professor Dickinson provides a historical overview of the development of the African- American religious expereince from 1600 through the present. He explains the contributions of African religions to African-American religiosity, the relationship of early Black churches with White churches and the role of these churches in the abolitionist movement up through the end of the 19th century. He further describes the role of the Black church in articulating an Afrocentric theology, its role in proletarianizing the Black popualtion and in the Civil Rights Movement. Finally, he discusses the current tension in the Black church in the United States between liberation theology and prosperity theology.
