I – STANDARDS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PAE

1. From August 2000 onwards, the PAE will consist of two phases:

a) Pedagogical Preparation;

b) Supervised Teacher Training.

2. Only students who take and pass both phases will be entitled to receive the PAE Certificate.

3. The PAE is optional for USP Graduate students, except for CAPES grantees. In order to comply with CAPES demands, masters students who are CAPES grantees are obliged to take pedagogical preparation only, while doctoral students are obliged to take the two phases.

II – ABOUT THE PEDAGOGICAL PREPARATION PHASE (PPP)

1. The characteristics of the Pedagogical Preparation Phase will depend on the structure given by each Unit’s PAE Coordination Commission:

a) one graduate subject on University and Higher Education, with credits;

b) set of conferences on Higher Education, involving Education specialists, condensed in a shorter period;

c) activity core, involving the preparation of didactical material, curriculum discussions, resumed subject contents and course planning, coordinated by faculty members.

2. The Pedagogical Preparation can be offered once per year or per semester, depending on the Unit’s conditions and its Graduate students’ demands. It is pointed out that, as a prerequisite for Supervised Teacher Training, the PPP must be offered on a regular basis.

3. In the b or c mode, the Pedagogical Preparation Phase can give students the right to special credits.

4. There is no Monthly Financial Aid for the Pedagogical Preparation Phase.

Observation: The Licentiate program is directed at Basic and Secondary Education. Therefore, it does not correspond to the Pedagogical Preparation Phase, which is directed at Higher Education.

III – ABOUT REGISTRATION FOR THE SUPERVISED TEACHER TRAINING PHASE (STTP)

1. Any student regularly enrolled in graduate programs, masters and doctoral courses who has taken the Pedagogical Preparation Phase can be a candidate to participate in the PAE Supervised Teacher Training Phase.

2. Graduate students can participate in undergraduate subjects at different Units than the one where they are enrolled (the credits corresponding to the graduate student’s activities will be counted at the Unit in which (s)he is registered).

3. The masters/doctoral student can only register for the STTP in one single subject per semester.

4. Registrations will be accepted at each Unit, after publication in the official State Newspaper, for a period of20 days.

5. The student must register directly at the Unit responsible for the undergraduate subject, by means of the following documents:

a) registration request by candidate;

b) participation project elaborated by the faculty member responsible for the undergraduate subject to be administered during the next academic semester, including a description of the tasks the graduate student will be responsible for and the corresponding average hour load, to be determined by the Unit’s PAE Coordination Commission, in accordance with Decree GR 3347 from June 06th 2002.

c) authorization by graduate student’s advisor to participate in the STTP.

IV – ABOUT THE SELECTION FOR THE SUPERVISED TEACHER TRAINING PHASE

1. Candidates will be selected by the PAE Coordination Commission at the Unit responsible for administering the undergraduate subjects, to be determined by the CPG.

2. The PAE Coordination Commission at the Unit is responsible for selecting the candidates in accordance with the criteria it has established (in conformity with general standards) and which have been approved by the CPG. The entire process must be analyzed and approved by the CPG, which will subsequently send the documentation to the Pro-Rectory of Graduate Studies according to item 3.

3. The list of selected candidates must be sent to the Pro-Rectory of Graduate Studies by June 10 and November30 each year, to be approved by the Central PAE Commission in an administrative process containing:

a) call for registrations to select students;

b) list of undergraduate subjects offered for the PAE, in which the trainees can be active;

c) list with the trainees’ name, their USP number, course (masters or doctoral) and hours per week to be dedicated to the training;

d) selection criteria used by the PAE Coordination Commission at the Unit, including the CPG’s approval;

e) each student’s registration card, correctly filled out;

f) student’s school record, indicating which Pedagogical Preparation Phase mode was accomplished, the period and year;

g) work project to be developed by the student during the semester;

h) document by the PAE Coordination Commission and the Graduate Commission, approving the list of students who will take the supervised teacher training.

4. The PAE’s monthly financial aid is aimed at those graduate students who were selected among the candidates for the Supervised Teacher Training Phase.

a) each Unit receives a certain amount of quotas, which are defined by the Pro-Rectory of Graduate Studies;

b) the monthly financial aid will be proportional to the number of hours the trainee dedicates to the Program (4 or 6);

c) the monthly financial aid can be granted for up to two semesters per student;

V – ABOUT THE SUPERVISION OF THE SUPERVISED TEACHER TRAINING PHASE

1. The Professor responsible for the undergraduate subject will be in charge of supervising the project.

2. The function of supervisor will be separated from that of the student’s advisor, although coincidence between both functions is not prohibited.

3. The supervisor is responsible for guiding the teaching activities developed by the trainee and for following the development of the program.

VI - ABOUT THE SUPERVISED TEACHER TRAINING PHASE REPORT

1. Any student who participates in the Supervised Teacher Training Phase must elaborate a detailed report of all activities accomplished during the training period.

2. This report must be signed and submitted together with the supervisor’s evaluation.

3. The PAE Coordination Commission at the Unit must evaluate the students’ report and decide on their approval or reprobation, considering whether the activities were accomplished in accordance with the plans approved when the trainees were selected.

3.1 – the Commission is entitled to use counselors for this evaluation;

3.2 – if the student is not approved, (s)he will not be entitled to receive the PAE certificate. If the student is a CAPES grantee, (s)he will have to repeat the activity, without any financial aid, to comply with this agency’s requirements.

4. The PAE Coordination Commission at the Unit must elaborate a general opinion about the program and submit it to the CPG for final evaluation and further submission to the Central PAE Commission.

VII – ABOUT THE TRAINING REPORT TO BE SENT TO THE CENTRAL PAE COMMISSION

1. The PAE Coordination Commission at the Unit must send a Report to the CPG and the Central PAE Commission with the following information:

a) list of students who participated in the Supervised Teacher Training Phase and their respective evaluation;

b) list of students who dropped out of the program, date and justification, approved by the PAE Commission and the CPG;

c) list of subjects in which the Supervised Teacher Training was realized;

d) a general description of the activities accomplished by Supervised Teacher Training students, as well as a list of difficulties faced and suggestions for improving the PAE.

VIII – GENERAL DETERMINATIONS

1. The satisfactory conclusion of the training phase will entitle the student to receive a certificate of participation in the Program, which must be filled out by the PAE Coordination Commission at the Unit and sent to the Pro-Rectory of Graduate Studies, to be signed by the Chair of the Central PAE Commission.

2. The student who successfully concludes the program can receive up to 20% of the required graduate program credits, to the discretion of the Unit’s CPG.

3. During the Supervised Teacher Training Phase, students can withdraw from the PAE, before the end of the established term, as follows:

a) interrupting registration, giving up or finishing the course;

b) not complying with the training hours established in the commitment term;

c) not complying with the training plan.

4. In case of interruption or withdrawal from the Supervised Teacher Training Phase, the Central PAE Commission must be informed immediately

5. In case of withdrawal, the student will immediately lose the monthly financial aid.

IX – ABOUT THE COMPOSITION OF THE PAE COORDINATION COMMISSION AT THE UNIT

1. The number of Members of the PAE Coordination Commission must be defined by the Graduate Commission, after consulting the Undergraduate Commission, including the student representative, as established in Article 8 of Decree GR-3347.

2. The coordinator of the PAE Coordination Commission must be appointed by the Graduate Commission, after consulting the Undergraduate Commission.
