The "Sandwich" fellowship is aimed at financing a foreign training period as part of the doctoral course. As stated on the CAPES site:
"The Doctoral Training fellowship aims to grant students the opportunity to develop part of their doctoral research at a renowned foreign institution and is based on the principle of cooperation between lecturers and researchers with a view to the formation of new doctoral graduates in the country. The candidatures presented to CAPES must demonstrate a clear cooperative relation between the advisor in Brazil and the co-advisor abroad.
The doctoral training abroad must be a part of a set of cooperative activities between Brazilian and foreign courses. The desired academic partnership should not permit any school fee payments.
With respect to the above, CAPES has made a number of adjustments in this support mode, which will be effective as from the candidatures presented to start the training period in March 2005.
Doctoral students who are regularly enrolled in a course that has been evaluated by CAPES and that received a grade of 3 or more can use the foreign doctoral training. In this mode, doctoral students are allowed to realize a training period of between 4 and 12 months to develop activities abroad, which are complementary and essential for their formation project in Brazil. The main aim of the foreign training should not be the realization of courses, subjects and seminars." |
According to a CAPES resolution, students in doctoral programs that received a grade of 5 or higher can present the “sandwich” fellowship request through the institution (obs.: if they want to, students can hand in their request directly to CAPES, in the "Counter" mode).
To present a “sandwich” fellowship request through the USP, students who are regularly enrolled in a doctoral program at FEA must:
1. Join the documentation required by CAPES – information on the site
obs.: applicants must already have received the acceptance letter from the teaching institution where they want to do their training
2. Hand in the complete documentation at the Graduate Secretary, according to the calendar below:
Start date of foreign activity | Deadline for Presenting the Request at the Graduate Secretary | CAPES Result |
January – February | | November 30 |
March - April | | January 31 |
May – June | | March 31 |
July – August | | May 31 |
September – October | | July 31 |
November - December | | September 30 |
After receiving the documentation, a graduate program commission will evaluate the fellowship requests and pronounce an opinion, which will be sent to the Pro-Rectory of Graduate Studies.
The Pro-Rectory will verify the documentation, add its opinion and send the requests to CAPES in Brasília.
